Finnegan would like to say thanks to all the Project Ocean supporters that helped protect his friends by signing the Shark Petition to help stop shark finning.
On Thursday November 22nd, after fighting a long 6 year battle, the European Parliament voted to close the loopholes in the European Union ban on shark finning.
This is a huge accomplishment as the EU is one of the largest exporters of shark fins to the Asia market. There has been a ban on shark finning by the EU since 2003, but because of a loophole, fishing vessels with a “special fishing permit” were allowed to continue if they landed the fins separately from the bodies. By an overwhelming favor, the European Commission’s proposal to impose the best practice for finning ban enforcement is now in place. This ban will prohibit the removal of shark fins at sea.
There is still a lot of work to be done to limit shark fisheries and gain protections for some highly fished shark species. So, lets keep the fight going by informing others about the positive changes and the changes that still need to take place.
